School Tour October 2017

6th Class had their first school tour of the year yesterday (27/10/2017). Our first stop was the Croke Park Museum and Stadium.

Following that we visited Arbour Hill Cemetry which is the last resting place of 14 of the executed leaders of the insurrection of 1916. Among those buried there are Patrick Pearse and James Connolly. The leaders were executed in Kilmainham and then their bodies were transported to Arbour Hill, where they were buried.

We also visited the museum at Collins Barracks where we saw the Asgard yacht on display. The Asgard was used in gun-running and facilitated the delivery of 1500 Mauser rifles to the Irish Volunteers at Howth Harbour  on 26 July 1914. Molly’s dad was involved in the restoration work. We then visited the exhibitions at Proclaiming a Republic: The 1916 Rising.

Our last (and possibly favourite) stop of the day was McDonald’s in Stillorgan.

Our next tour will take place at the end of March. We will be visiting Kilmainham Gaol.
