Here are some examples with step by step instructions:

2 digit by 1 digit multiplication examples:

Example 1:

23

x 27

161

Step 1:   3 multiplied by 7 equals 21

Step 2:  Write down the 1 and carry the 2.

Step 3:  2 multiplied by 7 equals 14 and add on the number that you carried up (which is 2).

So 14 + 2 = 16

Answer : 161.

Example 2:

4 5

x36

270

Step 1:  5 multiplied by 6 equals 30.

Step 2:  Write down the 0 and carry the 3.

Step 3:  4 multiplied by 6 equals 24 and add on the number you carried (which is 3).

So 24 + 3 = 27.     Answer = 270

Sometimes we don’t have to carry on a number.

Example below.

2 3

X 3

6 9

Step 1:  3 X 3 =9

Step 2:  2 X 3 = 6

Answer : 69

Another example is when there is a zero.

7 0

X 5

350

Step 1: 0 X 5 =0

Step 2: 7 X 5 =35

Answer: 350
