Our Performance for Proclamation Day
As part of Proclamation Day 2016, Mr. O’ Brien’s 5th Class and Mrs. Lawlor’s 6th Class performed “The Foggy Dew” and “Óró, Sé do Bheatha Abhaile”.
“The Foggy Dew” was written by Canon Charles O’Neill (1887-1963), a parish priest of Kilcoo and later Newcastle, County Down, sometime after 1919. This song chronicles the Easter Rising of 1916, and encourages Irishmen to fight for the cause of Ireland, rather than for the British, as so many young men were doing in World War I.
The version of “Óró, Sé do Bheatha Abhaile” we sang is the version written by poet and revolutionary Pádraig Pearse, welcoming volunteers back to Ireland for the 1916 Rising.

World Book Day
As part of World Book Day, we are entering the Design a National Book Token Competition. We had to design a book-themed National Book Token. A panel of judges will select a winner and runner up in each category. One overall winner’s design will be made into a real National Book Token and distributed to bookshops nationwide in time for Christmas.
Here are some of our entries. Fingers crossed!
Scratch
The boys in Mrs. Lawlor’s 6th Class have been learning Scratch since September last year. We do it every Friday morning on the school’s netbooks.
Scratch is a free application, developed by the MIT Media Lab, which allows users create and share their own interactive stories, animations and games. It is a form of computer programming but it easier to use than traditional computer programming languages as it consists of graphical blocks which snap together.
Scratch is used to support Literacy and Numeracy and can help children sharpen their logical thinking and problem-solving skills. A link to the the Scratch website can be found here.
Here are a few photos of our class doing Scratch. We will post some of our projects soon…
