18th -22nd May

Hello again everyone,

Thank you for all the emails this week I have really enjoyed seeing the children’s work and the photos of them doing it.  It really brightens up my day , knowing that they are safe and well and enjoying doing their work. Please continue to update me or if you have not I am available for any questions or updates on jamielee.gordon@stjosephsgorey.ie.

It was great to hear that the daily schedule is working well, but please don’t feel obligated to do it this way and there is no pressure to do all the work, just do as much as you can.

Hopefully, you will have their books by Wednesday which will make it much easier for yourselves  from now on, so the end of the week I will be allowing that you have them so they will be used in my planning.

Kind Regards,

Ms Gordon

Monday:

Writing: Talk about about what they did and then the children write their news about what they did at the weekend. Get them to read it out for you.

Reading: Read page 18 of the book what a box. Lots of work on these new words. Get the children to read them for you.  Have a word hunt, where you call out words for the children and they point to them.

Maths: Topic Data

Give your child some lego, counters, coins, buttons or something similar in two different colours. Ask them to make one row of eight on one colour and a row of five objects in a different colour underneath.

Ask them the following questions:

  • How many objects are there in the top row?
  • How many objects are on the bottom row?
  • How many more are on the top row than the bottom row?
  • Which colour has the most?
  • Which group has the least?
  • How many objects are there altogether?
  • What could I do to make the two rows have the same amount?

You can now repeat this activity but change the numbers from five and eight to seven and four etc.

Gaeilge: Practice the following words.

(bedtime)8 o clock

(brushing)

(bedroom)

(bed)

bathroom

You could ask the children to go and find these things/ places in the house.

Say:  taispeáin dom_____(show me) and pick the word.

eg taispeáin dom scuab fiacla. And they have to show you their toothbrush etc

Explain that it means if something belongs to someone, Give them examples. That is their coat.  They are playing with their dog etc.

The children then come up with their own sentences and write them down. 3 minimum.

Reading: Read and discuss Page 19 of what a box:

Maths:  Complete the following worksheet

Pirates Themes Block Diagram

If you can not print you could draw out an easier version. The main thing is the children count the number of each object eg pirates hats they the must colour in one square for each of the pirate hats they find. (Above the pirate hat picture) It is best to stick to one colour for each object.

Then ask questions when completed: What was there most/ less of? How many pirate hats did you find? etc

Gaeilge: Go back over all the words from yesterday. Remember focloir.ie is a good tool if you are having difficulty with pronunciation.

The children are asked to make a picture dictionary: Draw six large squares on a sheet of paper, get the children to write and draw the following words in each of the boxes: leaba , fiacla, scuab fiacla, cathaoir agus seomra codlata

Art: This work is by the artist Piet Mondrian.

Kids Homeschool Art Lesson: Piet Mondrian

All you need is paper and the following colours: red, yellow, blue and black and you can use a rule. Mondrian only uses squares and rectangles in his work. Draw lots of lines in your black colour on the paper. They  need to go down and across the page. Then colour in some of the squares and rectangles in your blue red and yellow.
